Bus Driver Authority Guided Program

Bus Driver completing his driver training program

In partnership with Transport for NSW, we’re helping eligible candidates to become accredited Bus Drivers in NSW.

Big Yellow Umbrella supports local community members to become accredited bus drivers through a structured, guided program delivered in partnership with Transport for NSW. The process of gaining a Bus Driver Authority can feel overwhelming — multiple checks, assessments, and licensing steps must be completed in the correct order. BYU helps applicants navigate each stage with clarity, confidence, and personalised support.

Why attain your Bus Driver Authority through Big Yellow Umbrella?

Many people begin the bus driver accreditation process each year, but only a small number complete it successfully. Transport for NSW has advised that drop‑off rates are high, largely because applicants attempt the process alone without guidance. BYU bridges that gap by providing 1‑on‑1 support at every step, significantly increasing completion and employment outcomes.

Program costs

Big Yellow Umbrella covers the cost of all stages of the program — including training, assessments, and support — provided the applicant successfully completes each stage.

How the program works

Applicants progress through a structured, multi‑stage pathway that includes:

  • Medical assessment
  • Criminal history and background checks
  • Licence documentation and upgrades (e.g., MR/HR licence)
  • Driver Authority application
  • Practical training and mentoring
  • Employment readiness and referral to operators

Each stage must be successfully completed before moving to the next.

Personalised support

Throughout the process, BYU provides:

  • 1‑on‑1 guidance
  • Help with documentation and forms
  • Support with medical and background checks
  • Peer mentoring
  • Employment opportunities upon completion

This hands‑on support is what sets the BYU pathway apart from applying directly through Service NSW.

Baby La La is amazing! A fun, new theme every week, a new song sheet to take home and add to the repertoire, and most importantly excellent bonding time with bub. Music, movement and reading - my daughter and I loved it. Thank you Big Yellow Umbrella - we can’t wait for the next one!
